Pets Naturally: Not All Treats Are Created Equal

As pet parents, we want to provide our furry family members with their best possible life. When it comes to choosing the best diet for our dogs, we research excessively and get advice from our trusted veterinarians, however, sometimes the treats we purchase lack proper attention when it comes to ingredients. Pet parents tend to grab any box off the shelf at the grocery or pet store without taking the time to read the ingredient label. Many treats contain artificial ingredients and are not fit for human consumption, so why would we feed these to our family members? If you can’t eat them yourself, your dog most likely shouldn’t either.

Don’t blink, or you might miss The Grafted Root Eatery, on the edge of the Coach Stop shopping plaza near where South Saginaw Street meets Holly Road in Grand Blanc. Its understated exterior works for owner Michele Matthews, who likens the vibe to a speakeasy and would much prefer a secret knock to intrusive signage.

We’ve asked three different farmers during the long winter months, “What are your plans this winter?” The winter is a very different time for farmers, it’s a time for reflection, a rapid change of pace, and occasionally a chance to relax!

This month, we spoke to Patrick and Kelly of Daybreak Dreamfarm. The two met working for the Maine Conservation Corps, found their way to Pond Hill Farm for an internship a few years later and decided to cultivate their own dream and start a farm in 2014!

Anticipating the coming new year always feels both exciting and a bit daunting to me. The changing over of the calendar year is often a transitional time. It is a time for slowing down our hectic pace, and reflecting on the year previous, but it also induces a feeling of excitement and curiosity about what the future will bring. Though change is the only constant in our universe, this fact doesn’t necessarily make it easier for us humans to endure. It is often the difficult transitions in our lives, those which present us with the most obstacles, that ends up shaping our character in meaningful ways. Life transitions can act as markers, which serve to help us differentiate the different phases of our life, and provide opportunities towards personal growth.

Once Upon a Pasty

If you’ve been to the Upper Peninsula, you have probably had a pasty. In the 1800s, many Cornish migrants came to the US, particularly the UP, to work in the iron mines. With them, they brought Cornish pasties. These hearty hand pies are traditionally packed with beef, onions, potatoes, and rutabagas. Today, they remain wildly popular throughout the UP and northern Michigan acting as a reminder of Michigan’s mining history.

The Coolest Thing About My Job

I’m not bragging, but there are a lot of cool things about my job as the NE Local Food Coordinator with Taste the Local Difference. I get to hang out with other local farmers, producers, and small business owners; I get to eat the food they’ve grown or created; drink the libations they’ve conceived; partake of their businesses’ inventions; help put on events celebrating their work; and tell everybody how great this region of Michigan is because of these people and their labors of love. It’s a pretty sweet deal.

Award-Winning Fruit Syrups Celebrating Local Flavors

Drive due south of Michigan State University’s campus and in 5 short miles you’ll happily find yourself at Swallowtail Farm. This charming diversified fruit, vegetable and flower farm is operated by Anne Rauscher with help from her husband and two children. The 150 year old farmstead was purchased in 2005 and planted with its first fruits (raspberries) in 2006. Over the last 11 years, Anne and David have worked tirelessly to promote healthy land and soil, develop strong community, and grow delicious food. Visiting the farm, these values are on obvious display.
