Eat Local Year Round – Goodwill Farm to Freezer

Christina Carson, Find Local Food, Guest Post, Retail, Uncategorized

Winter in Northern Michigan presents a formidable challenge when it comes to sourcing local produce. While season extension systems and storage crops provide great options, the depths of winter still result in limited local produce availability. Exciting as these systems are, additional local produce choices are always a welcome joy in the winter months. Thankfully, here in northern Michigan we’re blessed with the Goodwill Farm to Freezer program.

Boyne City has been making waves in their commitment to local food in recent years, with a booming year-round farmers market and the opening of The Grain Train’s second location. Now, with this spring’s opening of Northern Table, they can boast a serious farm-to-table restaurant as well!  In true farm-to-table spirit, Northern Table offers a full seasonally-rotating menu as well as daily features based on local ingredient availability.

Julienne Tomatoes has been serving great food featuring local ingredients since 2003, long before most downtown Petoskey restaurants were listing local producers on their menus. Owner and Chef, Julie Adams, wanted to feature as many local businesses as she could right from the start because it just made sense — supporting the people with whom you share a local community.
