Summer Spaghetti with Pea Shoot Pesto and Roasted Tomatoes

Bailey Samp, Find Local Food, Recipes

Here is one of my favorite quick and easy recipes to enjoy during the Summer. I always try to make pea shoot pesto in the early Spring and freeze it for easy Summer dishes. This recipe can also be enjoyed as a cold pasta salad on a hot Summer day. Add fresh microgreens as a garnish and pack a picnic basket along with a bottle of local white wine before hitting the beach!

Spirit of Walloon and Lakeside Farm

Lakeside Farm : A History and a Lifestyle

Bailey Samp, Environment, Farmers Markets, Find Local Food, Stories

When I first sat down with Dave Skornia of Lakeside Farm, he was incredibly moved and excited to share his story with us for the 2018 Guide to Local Food. He cares deeply about his farm and homestead and I knew right away we wouldn’t be able to do it complete justice in the yearly publication. This is Dave’s personal story about the history of his homestead, his love for farming, and what he raises and sells on his farm today. His inspiring story expresses his deep passion and dedication to the land, and motivation to help beginning farmers. So I thought, who else to tell the story better than Dave himself?

Did you know that May is National Asparagus month? If you are anything like me, you can’t wait for the first asparagus spears to start nudging their way through the soil. It is one of the first Spring vegetables to be harvested and a kick-off to the growing season in Northern Michigan.

Kick off a Healthy Summer with the YMCA

Bailey Samp, Event, Farmers Markets, Find Local Food, Get Involved, Health

When kids are inspired, they can do anything, which is why the YMCA hosts a national event each year to do just that! Healthy Kids Day is a national initiative to improve the health and well-being of kids and families, awaken their imagination, allow them to explore new activities and choose healthier habits.

The FREE event on April 21st  will be an opportunity for kids and families to explore local vendors, take part in educational activities and learn how to keep their minds and bodies active as they gear up for summer vacation.
