Lifting Up Locally Grown Food at the Flint Farmers Market

Farmers Markets, Find Local Food, Guest Post, Leann Luke, Southeast Michigan

There are big things happening for local farmers and the community at the Flint Farmers’ Market. If you have ever shopped at this market in the summer, you know the outside pavilion is a beautiful space to shop and soak in the sights, smells, and sounds that encapsulate the growing season and all that Flint area farmers have to offer. However, this season you may notice some changes in the pavilion.

This space was created to provide a place to showcase local farmers and help consumers more easily identify locally grown produce. The Farmers’ Square is a space where the shopper can come and be confident that they are purchasing from and, ultimately, supporting a local farmer.

Another purpose for the Farmers’ Square is to help educate the public about the importance of local food. In this area, and inside the market, you will now be able to find a plethora of information on the health benefits and seasonality of local food. Many of the local farmers are Screen Shot 2018-07-06 at 10.24.43 AMalso excited to provide community education classes during the market. The first class (held on opening day) focused on container gardening and was taught by Stony Creek Farm from Mayville, MI. A new class will be held each month (details can be found at the Flint Farmers’ Market website: http://flintfarmersmarket.com/events-list/).

There are so many amazing vendors this year at the Flint Farmers’ Market, both inside the market and outside in the new Farmers’ Square and Pavilion. Come see and meet the farmers and see everything the Flint Farmers’ Market has to offer!
