Edible Flint Sows Seeds for a Healthy Future

Chris Hardman, Edible WOW, Event, Farmers Markets, Find Local Food, Gardening, Get Involved, Southeast Michigan

It’s a beautiful day in Flint, Michigan. The sky is clear, flowers are in bloom and the volunteer gardeners in the edible flint Demonstration Garden are hard at work. Mike Roose is watering pepper plants in the raised-bed gardens. Scott Poinsett is trimming the garden perimeter, and Garden Manager Ginny Farah is harvesting crops for neighborhood residents. By the time they are done, the community garden will look its best in preparation for the evening’s food garden tour.

Farmer 2 Farmer : Land for the Next Generation

Economy, Get Involved, Guest Post, Learn More, Sam Plotkin

The average age of farm operators in the United States is 58. In the next 20 years, an estimated 70 percent of privately owned agricultural land is expected to change hands in the US. Farmers in the Grand Traverse Region are not immune to this graying trend, as the average age of operators in this area ranges from about 55 in Kalkaska to nearly 60 in Manistee. Moreover, it is expected that around 83,000 acres of farmland in our region will change hands in coming years as well.

Introducing the Farm to Resource Directory

Get Involved, Learn More, Sharron May

The rising demand for local food has presented new opportunities and challenges for an industry that has largely been export-based for the past 50 years. So when local producers in the region determined that better access to expertise, training, business development and capitalization would help them meet this growing demand, TLD listened.

Find Local Food, Get Involved, Learn More, Tricia Phelps

Over the last year, Taste the Local Difference® has added a lot of new territory to our service area. For the first time ever we are including all of northern Michigan’s food & farming community– both the Upper and Lower Peninsulas. That’s why we’ve nearly double the size of our newest publication, the 13th edition of our annual Guide to Local Food.

You can find The Guide to Local Food in Northern Michigan for FREE at select locations throughout the region. The guide is an important community resource, so let us know if you need a copy by emailing: info@localdifference.org or stop by one of the sites listed below!
