Local Foodie Checklist
The Local Foodie Checklist is a monthly list of ways to support your local Michigan food scene. Here’s some suggestions for the month:
1) Order Takeout
Many restaurants and their staff have been severely affected by COVID-19 and its restrictions. Michigan has many incredible restaurants and food experiences, and you can help make sure they’re here to stay by safely ordering takeout from your favorite restaurant, and enjoying it in the comfort of your own home. Check out our favorites here!
2) Attend a Farmers Market
In these unprecedented times, Farmers Markets across the state have pivoted to safely providing fresh and local produce in different ways. Some of our partner markets, like the Sara Hardy Farmers Market , the Leelanau Farmers Markets, the Pittsfield Township Farmers Market, and the Downtown Marquette Farmers Market have moved to an online platform. Other partners, such as Kalamazoo Farmers Market, have shifted to a drive-thru format.
3) Buy Local!
Many stores offer ready-made items, such as breads, jams, sauces, pasta and more from local culinarians. Seek out grocery stores and co-ops that source locally and place an order for pick-up.
4) Stay Social – Safely!
Follow your favorite chefs, restaurants, bars, and farmers on social media accounts to stay up-to-date on any new policies or hours. Plus, they often provide you updates on menus, what’s in season, or even just how things are going.
5) Read Local!
The Michigan cookbooks I seem to constantly pick up are Ruffage by Abra Berens and Sister Pie by Lisa Ludwinski, and there are so many Michigan chefs with books, and what better time to try a new recipe? See if your local bookstore offers curbside options or local shipping.
We also have a great (state-wide!) (and brand new!) 2020 Food Guide, free except for shipping to your front door! It’s a great way to stay connected with local food near you, and throughout the state.
