I sat down with Jesse Huff of Radio Results Network, one of our main sponsors, to discuss this year’s MQT Local Food Fest. After casual greetings, he started off with, “Wow, year three!” I hadn’t really thought about it, but it’s crazy to think about how things have worked out. A simple conversation about getting NMU Hospitality Management together for an event of some kind has spiraled into an annual farm-to-table celebration, honoring and connecting links throughout the Upper Peninsula’s local food system, from farmers to eaters and everyone in-between.
It’s Sunday morning and the Eastern Market, one of the nation’s oldest urban markets is teeming with visitors. Shoppers pack the market sheds and weave in and out of market stalls sipping coffee, trying on unique jewelry, and perusing locally made art. Detroit area food artisans sample their products and the air is filled with delicious scents wafting from several food trucks. On September 22, The Detroit Foodie Fair will be adding to the fun!
The Sunrise Side Wine & Food Festival at Harrisville Harbor is celebrating its 25th Anniversary in 2019! Over 15 participating Michigan wineries, breweries, and cideries; homegrown music; a Local Artists Guild display; and local restaurants are representing at this event. It’s not surprising that the fest has decided to take it to the next local level by becoming a Certified Local Food Event this year.
Maple syrup production is a strong aspect of the history of the Alcona FFA chapter. However, it wasn’t until 2005 through 2007 that the Alcona FFA chapter wrote grants to build their own maple syrup production facility for pure Michigan maple syrup at Alcona Community High School. This dream came true; and in 2007, we built what was to become the Alcona FFA Sugar Shack. The Sugar Shack was added to a log cabin previously existing on our school’s property. Since the spring of 2009, we have hosted Maple Syrup Celebration Day at our facility – and this spring will be no different –marking the 10th Anniversary of this event!
Conference season is upon us! With so many food and farming conferences between now and March, it’s often difficult to decide which to attend. If you’re free February 9th, I’d highly recommend attending the Michigan Food and Farming Systems (MIFFS) 16th annual Michigan Family Farms Conference. This conference provides beginning, small-scale, and culturally diverse farmers a chance to network and learn. At past conferences, I shared conversation with other small-scale farmers, learned new skills from talented presenters, and left energized and motivated for another season of farming.

Registration is now open for the fifth biennial Michigan Good Food Summit! The Summit will be held on Monday, October 22, 2018 at the Kellogg Hotel & Conference Center on Michigan State University’s campus. New this year, the conference will be a Certified Local Food Event with at least 20% of all ingredients coming from local producers.
When I say the words “county fair,” what comes to mind? For me there is nostalgia that rolls in as I think of my own Menominee County Fair at Shakey Lakes Campground in Stephenson, Michigan. There, I competed in animal showmanship for multiple species, entered crafts and photos, rode my bike like a hooligan, and made endless campfire delicacies like smores and pudgie pies.
