Get a Local Tree this Christmas!

Guest Post, Specialty Producers, Stories

The holidays are here and it is time to start the search for your real Christmas tree. The good news is, in Michigan you have several great options to choose from when looking for that perfect tree. Michigan growers produce a wide variety of tree species, in fact, more than any other state. When visiting a choose and cut farm or a retail lot, you may find trees that are soft to the touch like a Frasier Fir, blue in color like a Blue Spruce, or trees that smell like citrus called a Concolor Fir. So, whether you like a fir or a spruce, or and evergreen or citrus smell, we have you covered!

Lavender Lane: A Scent-Sational Farm

Environment, Farmers Markets, Find Local Food, Guest Post, Joe Pusta, Specialty Producers

Lavender Lane is a specialty lavender farm located 15 minutes south of Ann Arbor in Milan.  As educators, my wife and I founded our farm in 2014 and have since expanded it to include over 5,000 plants; we grow over 16 varieties of lavender in colors of purple, pink, white and blue! Aside from its scent-sational aroma and breathtaking views, lavender keeps its appealing scent for years, can be used in cooking, promotes sound sleep, uplifts one’s mood and calms the mind and body!

Downtown Marquette Farmers Market Opens May 20!

Economy, Event, Farmers Markets, Find Local Food, Get Involved, Melissa Orzechowski

As spring unfolds in the Upper Peninsula, seedlings have been growing in hoop houses, greenhouses and now fields to prepare for the Downtown Marquette Farmers Market opening day on May 20th. Many farmers markets in the UP do not open until June or even July, but Myra Zyburt, the market manager, explained they are able to open in May because there are enough farmers using season extension techniques that have produce that they are ready to sell.
