Ann Arbor Seed Company is a small farm, growing quality vegetable and flower seeds since 2012. We operate less than an acre, just outside of the city. You would be amazed at how much seed production we can squeeze out of our small piece of land. The small scale keeps us close to the crops so we can give them the attention they deserve.
We were drawn to seed saving because it’s beautiful. We enjoy growing vegetable crops through their entire natural lifecycle. We get to watch lettuce bolt, carrots in bloom, and trip over large fully-ripe zucchini.
We built a farm around seed saving because the work is dearly needed. For decades small-scale regional seed saving has been replaced by large national companies. Much of the world’s agronomic seed is controlled by a few chemical companies. Heirloom varieties don’t bring in the big bucks, so they have been lost and forgotten. When only a few people control the world’s seed, then only a few perspectives are brought to breeding and selection.
All of our seeds are open-pollinated. This means that they are grown naturally, pollinated by the insects or the wind. It means that you can save your own seed from our varieties. Don’t just say NO to GMO, say YES to small scale independent seed saving!
We care for our farm in much the same way that you care for your garden. We know that this extra care contributes to the quality of seed that we save. We are certified organic and consider the health of our soil to be our most important responsibility. Varieties are selected and bred for the best flavor, healthy vigor, and usefulness in the kitchen. Simply put, we are saving seeds from our favorite vegetables to grow and eat.
